We are more than a business
Our Vision
How it started / Matilda began as a heartfelt tribute to Abuelita Ana Matilde, rooted in the Dominican heritage and cherished recipes passed down through generations. Matilda started as a dream to share the joy, love, and culture that Abuelita embodied.
Our Growth
How it’s going / Despite facing unexpected challenges, Matilda has thrived, earning accolades like the "Best of RI" Editors Pick Award and cultivating a loyal following. The pandemic prompted innovation, leading to the introduction of online orders, take-out options, and a diverse menu offering Matilda's signature sauces, frozen empanadas, and complete meals. Chef Tony's journey, marked by a tragic accident, is a testament to resilience and the unwavering support of the Matilda community.
Our Future
Where we are heading / Matilda envisions a future that extends beyond physical boundaries. The journey continues with plans for a food truck, catering services, and exploration of exciting opportunities like late-night wedding snacks and pop-ups at breweries. As Matilda evolves, the commitment to preserving Abuelita's legacy and celebrating Dominican heritage remains steadfast.
Meet the Founder
Chef Tony
Meet Chef Tony, the creative force behind Matilda's Empanadas. At 14, he traded sports for the kitchen, learning classic Dominican dishes from his mom and Abuelita. After graduating from Johnson and Wales University in 2012, he gained experience in various food roles.
Inspired by the birth of his twins in 2017, Chef Tony took the leap to pursue his dream. Matilda was born, blending his Abuelita's gifts of language, culture, family, and cherished recipes. Now, he specializes in crafting the famous pastelitos, sharing flavors and traditions in every bite. Chef Tony's journey is a simple celebration of heritage, family, and the love in Matilda.
